  • Ferrer and Simon in second tie for Spain-France

    9/16/11 3:48 AM | Cheryl Murray
Ferrer and Simon in second tie for Spain-France World No. 5 David Ferrer will take on French defender Gilles Simon in the second of Friday’s rubbers in Cordoba, Spain.

David Ferrer and Gilles Simon both come into this semifinal tie off round of 16 showings at the US Open. Usually Ferrer playing at home on his favored clay courts would spell trouble for the French team. This time though, Ferrer is still trying to come back from a microfracture of his wrist earlier this summer. His form at the US Open was still a bit scratchy.

Simon, ranked 11 in the world, just got a win over Ferrer a few weeks ago at the Cincinnati Masters. It was a tough 3-setter, but Simon eventually prevailed over the rusty Spaniard. Prior to that, Ferrer was undefeated in 2 matches against the Frenchman.

The crowd will give Ferrer a boost, but the Spaniard is going to be susceptible to an upset in this match. He was not convincing in his round of 16 loss to Andy Roddick at the US Open.

    Prediction – Simon in 5.

Amen, Ricky, and you were of course, right. I saw Ferrer at the Davis Cup in Austin, where he found a whole other gear...in a highly partisan US crowd, he won fans with his indefatigable retrieval and aggressive play, stunning Roddick and Fish. (The big bluff guy from Arkansas behind me kept saying "Man, that little Spanish guy can sure (hit, run, play,)! What did you say his name was again?") It was so apparent how much the competition meant to the entire Spanish team, you couldn't help but be impressed. I had no doubt he would be victorious on clay in Spain, especially after Rafa won.

So happy for Ferrer that he won. On clay, Simon can't beat Ferrer, even though Simon did win a 500 event on clay at Hamburg this year. Ferrer is easily the top four or five guy on clay, and the top three positions are being held by the top three guys.
