David Ferrer’s win over Gilles Simon 6-1, 6-4, 6-1 gives Spain a 2-0 lead. A win in doubles on Saturday by Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasdco would seal a trip to the finals for the Spanish squad.
Despite a nagging wrist injury that kept world No. 5 David Ferrer sidelined for part of the summer, the Spaniard played outstanding clay court tennis on Friday afternoon. Gilles Simon attempted to hit through the court, but Ferrer’s defense was simply too good.
France now sits in a 0-2 deficit against Spain, with an injury to Gael Monfils hurting French chances. Captain Guy Forget made the decision to bench Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in singles, probably due to Tsonga’s preference for faster surfaces, in lieu of Simon and Richard Gasquet, who was soundly beaten in the first rubber by Rafael Nadal.
Ferrer’s service statistics were not particularly impressive. The Spaniard served at 46% and hit just two aces for the entire match. It was more than enough to hold off Simon, however. The Frenchman managed to break Ferrer twice, but he was broken 8 times himself.
Spain will send Fernando Verdasco and Feliciano Lopez on court in doubles to take on Michael Llodra and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in doubles on Saturday.
