Roger Federer rebounds from a set and a break down to beat Lleyton Hewitt on Friday in Sydney. Federer's win puts Switzerland and Australia deadlocked at one apiece in their Davis Cup playoff tie.
Roger Federer started slow while making a quick turnaround following the U.S. Open, but he recovered to defeat Lleyton Hewitt 5-7, 7-6(5), 6-2, 6-3 in the second Davis Cup playoff rubber between Switzerland and Australia on Friday. Federer prevailed after two hours and 50 minutes at the Royal Sydney Golf Club to even the tie at one apiece.
Playing less than a week after losing to Novak Djokovic in the semis of the season's final Grand Slam, Federer struggled to pull away from Hewitt. The world No. 3 won far more points throughout the first 10 games of the match but could not break. Hewitt then broke at 5-5 with a clean return winner before serving out the first set one game later.
With momentum in hand and the crowd behind him, Hewitt raced to a 3-1 lead in the second thanks to a break in the third game. That, however, is when Federer woke up and turned the tide. The 16-time Grand Slam champion broke right back, forced a tiebreaker, and took it seven points to five.
From there it was all over for Hewitt. The underdog Aussie never earned another break, although he did have five chances in set three. Federer raised his level and seized two breaks in each of the final two sets, including a clincher at 5-3 in the fourth.
Federer wrapped up his effort with 52 winners--including 22 aces--and 37 unforced errors. Hewitt, who missed the U.S. Open due to injury, recorded 23 winners and 36 unforced errors.
