Australia and Switzerland will be trying to play their way into the 2012 Davis Cup World Group this weekend in Sydney. Bernard Tomic opens the action for the home team against Stanislas Wawrinka.
Bernard Tomic and Stanislas Wawrinka are set to open the Davis Cup proceedings this weekend between Australia and Switzerland. Host Australia has the choice of venue and will play the tie on the grass courts of the Royal Sydney Golf Club.
Going up against Roger Federer on grass is never an enticing option, but there is a method to Australia's madness.
"We have to look at what's our best chance of winning this Davis Cup tie and obviously playing Federer on any surface is not great," explained captain Patrick Rafter. "So we look at what is Wawrinka's worst surface and he does not like grass. If we've got any chance of beating these guys, we have to take down Wawrinka."
That task first belongs to Tomic, who will be going up against Switzerland's No. 2 player for the first time on Friday. Tomic is definitely in with a shot having come into his own this season. The 18-year-old is an even 10-10 at the ATP level in 2011 and he registers at a career-high ranking of 59th in the world. Tomic suffered a blowout loss to Marin Cilic at the U.S. Open, but his run to the Wimbledon quarterfinals bodes well for his grass-court prospects.
Wawrinka has cooled off mightily since a scorching start to the year. The world No. 19 has done very little since coming back from two sets down to beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the French Open third round. Wawrinka dropped his opener in Cincinnati then lost to Donald Young in round two of the U.S. Open.
Based on current form, surface, and home-court advantage, Tomic has a great chance of getting Australia on the board after one rubber. Of course, the pressure will be squarely on the youngster since Federer will be a huge favorite against Lleyton Hewitt in the second match.
This could go either way, but look for Tomic to prevail in five sets.
