  • Federer takes on Hewitt in second Davis Cup rubber

    9/15/11 5:47 AM | Ricky Dimon
Federer takes on Hewitt in second Davis Cup rubber Familiar foes Roger Federer and Lleyton Hewitt will take the court for a Davis Cup singles rubber on Friday in Sydney. Federer is playing less than a week after losing in the semifinals of the U.S. Open.

Roger Federer and Lleyton Hewitt will be squaring off for the 26th time in their careers on Friday when they clash in the second singles rubber of the Davis Cup playoff tie between Switzerland and Australia.

Federer leads the head-to-head series 17-8, including 3-2 on grass. However, they faced each other most recently in last year's Halle title match and Hewitt prevailed 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-4.

Both men head into this meeting with question marks. At 30 years old, Hewitt is struggling with injuries and appears to be slowing down in a hurry. The world No. 199 compiled a 1-2 record on American hard courts this summer and skipped the U.S. Open following a first-round exit in Winston-Salem.

Federer is in fine form, but he is making a quick turnaround after losing to Novak Djokovic last Saturday in the Open semifinals. The third-ranked Swiss looked great in fourth-round and quarterfinal blowouts of Juan Monaco and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, and he held two match points against the eventual champion before going down 7-5 in the fifth set.

"He's a great champion, we know that, and for sure it's always better if you have more days," Switzerland captain Severin Luthi said of Federer. "But I'm sure that he can handle this and be ready on Friday."

To say Federer can handle this would be an understatement. While Hewitt is a shadow of his former self, Federer is still going strong at 30. The 16-time Grand Slam champion has still won 15 of the last 16 against Hewitt despite dropping their most recent encounter.

All signs point to a straight-set romp for Federer.

I think it's kind of surprising that Australia would choose grass of all surfaces. It's not like they didn't know they'd be up against Mr. 6-time Wimbledon champion or anything.

set and a break Hewitt

Ricky
Why did you choose not to inform the rest of us with the standings of this match after youre last comment! Or are you only interrested in possible upsets? I reckon Fed showed his true spirit in the second set to get the breaker. Clearly he had a difficult time jetlagging from US to Auzieland is prob the worst thing to do.
respect old men.

Sienna , 9/16/11 11:31 AM

Sieena , where is Fleur?

fedexal , 9/16/11 11:43 AM

Sienna, if someone respects and admires Fed its Ricky...Are you going to pick a fight with Ricky now? You don't seem to get along with anybody these days, don't you? Or is glumness a chronic condition for you...maybe you just miss Fleur...

natashao , 9/16/11 11:48 AM

Sienna gets along with Fleur and mirror only. Mirror shows her and Fleur is Sienna !!

fedexal , 9/16/11 12:18 PM

lol, just mis-read title of Blog as "Wozniacki and Sienna battle for bragging rights" ...just for a moment there..;)

deuce , 9/16/11 1:18 PM

:)) deuce, hillarious...

natashao , 9/16/11 1:41 PM

I was just wondering why ricky was not following up on his livescoring? zjees what a hostile environment here.
Well I guess Fleur is trying to relax a little because she had to figth of so many desperate nadaninos that she deserves a break.
Is everybody settled down a little? Only Zare is still high on something I gues. The pod is certainly not only for Djoker but also his fans on this site use it to a larger amount that is prohibited.

Sienna , 9/16/11 1:58 PM

Five miles high with the fairies as usual.

ed251137 , 9/16/11 3:40 PM

It looks like roger will have to all the work since wawrinka isn't looking good.
Federer will have to win the doubles match and the singles against tomic.

Good luck Roger.

bleck , 9/16/11 3:57 PM

deuce, you are so funny.

Do you enjoy your sarcastic comments, hackling away like some kind of witch eating spaghetti that's all tangled up in the background?

Pass the sauce will you deuce and wipe away your smile.

Mirror image of Natasha, who is equally as annoying in a cloying, strangling kind of way.

Sienna, hi, how are you darling? Ignore these philly people who jest at your comments. You speak well and understand the truth of Federer's game. They don't because they are too busy cackling like a cokeroach.

bleck, tomic isn?t playing in the doubles.

Sieena , where is Fleur?
fedexal, 9/16/11 11:43 AM

fedexal can you spell Sienna's name right this time instead of being thick. It?s not that difficult, even for someone like you.

Show a bit of respect next time champers.

sienna, roger played well, considering a 20 hour flight and a turnaroynd of surfaces. He played just as we knew he would.

It is hostile you are right, especially with ed around.

What an idiot!

Fleur , 9/16/11 6:35 PM

Oh poisonous Ivy, please, u r no longer providing any entertainment, just really, really tedious now. I note too how you copy other posters all the time. According to fedexal you and Sienna are "mirror images" so now, according to you, natashao and I are. Well, I take that as a compliment, but how about some originality?
And please do something about your punctuation errors, they're really tedious now too.

deuce , 9/16/11 7:30 PM

like a witch eating spaghetti that's all tangled up?! oh what imagery.

mriiidula , 9/16/11 7:40 PM

mriiidula, as she attacks everyone on here I really like, expect to be next...;)

deuce , 9/16/11 7:51 PM

Shut up deuce.

You always complain about everything and don't see it in yourself. My God. You don't attack?

Are you kidding me?

Another puritan.

Fleur , 9/16/11 8:32 PM

Jeeze, PI is a stretcher case and has a can of worms where her brain should be.

ed251137 , 9/16/11 9:22 PM

aww deuce xxxxxxx
but i doubt it, we haven't had a conversation for that to happen. then again, neither did you..

mriiidula , 9/16/11 9:24 PM

ed, natashao, rafaisthebest, chlorostoma, jean, lucky, Sosueme, fedexal, zare, nadline, mriiidula and to the millions I've left out, apologies, just keep smiling, darlings, it's the only way :)

deuce , 9/16/11 9:59 PM

Fleur: If you dont like the hostile atmosphere here move over to Eurosport - you will find plenty of like minded people to chat to there who have lost touch with reality and will appreciate your warped sense of humour and bizarre comments.

ed251137 , 9/16/11 9:59 PM

ed, now laughing hysterically at PI's last post...... think I need help......help....

deuce , 9/16/11 10:06 PM

Is there where you come from Ed? Eurotrash?

miri, why with the kisses to people who are puritans? Go and join the hoff in Germany and kiss all you like on stage over there.

deuce, you seriously mad, hysterical, sarcastic. Yes. Littlest thing pleases you?

Tiny mind champers.

You defin?tely need help. That?s not in denial.

Fleur , 9/16/11 10:19 PM

Deuce: She's lost the plot again. Have to admit I read her posts with a kind of fascinated horror to see what new depths she will plunge to.

ed251137 , 9/16/11 10:44 PM

Ednumbers: to ever 'lose the plot' one must HAVE the plot to begin with....

Need I say more?

Sosueme , 9/16/11 11:26 PM

touche!

ed251137 , 9/16/11 11:43 PM

Good grief, is this a tennis site or a place for those who like to gang up and attack using their little code phrases? More like a witches den. I'm amazed at the image some have of themselves, thinking they are so sweet-tempered, amiable, and get along with everyone, that will get you an award alright. In your dreams. If only you could see yourselves as others see you, you'd be shocked to see the picture you portray of the phoniness that you exude. I suppose some are either too enthralled and in awe of being a part of the "in-group", like a bunch of teenagers, that they sadly are unaware of how they appear to some of us. I suppose we should hand out medals to those who so proudly boast of being able to get along with everyone. Yes, hypocrisy will do that very well, just say the right words and pretend, and pretend, and pretend. Unfortunately, some of us aren't that way, so we are branded and are ostracized for not saying the right catch phrases that will tickle the senses and/or fancies of those who love to gain some attention, albeit at the expense of others. How very cruel.

I'm amazed how some personalities change according to the site they visit. that's evidence enough of how phony they really are.

scoretracker , 9/17/11 2:41 AM

This tie does not look good for the Swiss. I hope Fed can work some magic to pull out a win, or else, the Swiss will be out of DC. i can just see the headlines if Rog loses this DC tie.

BTW, why isn't the topic of this thread being adhered to? Instead, all we have is the cast of some female movie showing us how nasty females can be when they have a girls night out.

scoretracker , 9/17/11 2:52 AM

Swiss are in complete control of this tie

RickyDimon , 9/17/11 3:22 AM

Rusty & Gooch just beat Fed/Wawrinka in doubles. Can't say I saw that one coming. :x

Kelli , 9/17/11 8:10 AM

Scoretracker: Often the banter and catchphrases you refer to are being used to deflect anger induced when troublemakers are around trying to incite a war on this site - or as in my own case when I have been singled out for a personal attack. However, I understand your irritation when too much 'in-talk' is going on which excludes others. But surely this is preferable to screeds of pointless tit for tat comments designed to wound others.

ed251137 , 9/17/11 9:22 AM

Fleur
Thank you. I'm doing fine. Actually the Open has made me so proud of Fed. People forget so easiley and tend to look away when Roger is in fine form. Again he showed in his semi that he is the one who can call the orders when he wants to. At the end of the day it was again on his racket like the last decade.

Peoplemake the mistake to say Fed was lucky that he had some years alone as the top players he was en is. So only after Rafa and Djoker they are now with the big 3.
They forget that the one who is there first is not lucky but he is the extreme. It is ofcourse easier to reach towards that level then to conquer the world with only youre own limits that can hold you back. I mean if Rafa was first he would have done just enough to be the best at that moment in time, just like Novak tries now. The difference with Fed was that he did not raise tennis for 1 level but 2 or maybe 3 if you see him compete with his younger foes. So the claim that Fed was lucky is stupid because only Fed was the one who could have made the difference he did.

But that is all behind us we are lucky that we are witnessing the full depth of his personality and life on court. We will see and enjoy all aspects of his tennislife. He is now entering the twilight years and I'm loving it.
Fans of Djoker are stating that he should skip Basel? I hope not because Fed is taking him on and willing to go for another round. He is entering the twilight years but with the most positive mindset as to all other topguys.

Thank you for not standing down to the haters and all the people here that want Fed to retire or lose his matches. We know exactly what I mean. Be carefull and enjoy Fed's matches win or lose.

Sienna , 9/17/11 10:32 AM

Hi Sienna,

It's people like Ednumbers who want to trash other fans here with useless banter...'let's see who is the most irritating poster...' etc., and think that's cool? and sing silly songs..'where have all the flowers gone..'Blinded by narcissistic crap, backed up by deuce..'oh but I care about so many people here..and I'm hurting' mental, when these people don't exist physically in their lives. Mental and very sad Sienna, to see people work out this way.

But you are great. You are here for the truth Sienna, until zare reappears.

The davis cup where Australia are 2 1 up right now. For 3 weeks they have been targeting Stan's strokes, not Roger's. Stan has all the work to do right now. Tomic was knocked out early at USO so has plenty of energy rserves.

Yes Sienna, Federer IS the player of the century, for that, I am certain. To bring up endless exuses (rafa fans) of a weak era, would apply to ALL players that didn't have rafa and novak in them. Deaf and blind with mental incapacity at large. Laver existed, borg existed and yet nothing is said about their weak era. Oh, of course, rafa and novak weren't born then, (neither was Roger!). Check the serve statistics, the amount of slams won, don't even compare to federer.

I put on spellcheck my English Sienna.

Hope it's better for you. Ednumbers you are just as irritating with your rants and ridiculing so take a leave out of your book! Go and make up some silly mental competition somewhere over the rainbow! Way up high!

You don't see yourself as a truble maker Ed, but you are one, you just blinded by emotion and your own inflated ego, big as a ballon, followed closly by deuce..'Oh I'm hurting'. See their comments just as fruitful!

Fleur , 9/17/11 1:37 PM

pathetic lost soul, reminds me of my friend maltheser1 :-)

phoenix , 9/17/11 3:49 PM

phoenix leave Ednumbers alone!

Sienna , 9/17/11 5:23 PM

phoenix... matlheser was pure sunshine compare to these two sad persons !!!

"I put on spellcheck my English Sienna. "...LOL... noooo.... admit... you asked someone other to do that for you :)...

zare , 9/17/11 8:08 PM

zare you everywhere? liking Federer it seems to me. Go away zare, blow with the wind sometimes, blow away like a plastic bag hi up in the heavens.

Sienna, your great. You really can stand up to haters like zare, they get there own way too much, but you just laugh.

your great sienna.

Fleur , 9/17/11 8:53 PM

Thanks Fleur...Likewise.

We are backed by the greatest player ever to pick up a racket.
