Despite a nonstop tennis season, Roger Federer is managing to find time for a lightning trip to Australia in hopes of helping Switzerland back into the World Group of the Davis Cup.
If the five-time New York champion finds himself in another title match this weekend, that might
truly complicate logistics. The Open has not staged a men's final on its proper concluding Sunday since 2007, with rain-offs and 24-hour delays the rule for the past three editions of the unlucky Slam.
Federer, whose participation was only revealed at the last possible moment, will join a lineup which includes Stanislas Wawrinka, Stephane Bohli and Marco Chiudinelli. The Swiss were relegated last season after a loss to Kazakhstan.
Australia is hoping to have Lleyton Hewitt fit in Sydney but can make no promises about the 30-year-old who has had foot injury problems all season and could not play the Open.
"It is what it is, it's a very unlucky draw for us," said Federer. "It will be very intriguing playing against Australia. It's tough for us to pack our bags, pay a lot of money for flights and hotels.
"The federation is not happy. At least the minimum we can do is try to win that tie and get back in the World Group. We'll see how it goes. I hope I can get there and play against the Aussies."
