The public post-victory cramps which struck Rafael Nadal in the middle of a US Open media conference are nothing special, according to Andy Roddick, who says the painful scenario is common every week on the ATP.
"Not to put a dampener on the story, but people cramp after matches when they're cold," said the 2003 Open champion. "It's just something that happens. It's just unfortunate it happened in front of you all. Every single player in there has had that happen before - every single one."
Nadal slid painfully to the floor from his chair with right leg cramping after beating David Nalbandian to reach the fourth round at the event where he is defending the title. Three physiotherapists arrived to treat him and after ten minutes on his back, the second seed was helped to his feet, walked to a bottle of sports drink, took a swig and continued his conference on his feet to prevent any more cramping.
Roddick says cramping is all a part of the brutal sport; "We run around, run miles and miles and miles and miles on the tennis court in nasty weather. You throw nerves in there, I mean, it happens. As long as it doesn't happen during a match, you're fine."

I'm not always fond of Andy's on court antics, but he usually hits the nail on the head during his pressors. I don't think there's a more to the point athlete than Andy R. Hopefully Rafa won't be answering questions about cramping for the next several tournaments.
