After a tight straight-set defeat of David Nalbandian, Rafael Nadal experienced painful cramps during his post-match presser.
Defending US Open champion Rafael Nadal gave the US Open press corp more than his match to write about. After a solid display of tennis, his best of the week so far, Nadal literally collapsed on the floor of the pressroom.
The match was physically demanding for Nadal. The middle set came easily for the Spaniard, but he was forced to work hard in the first and third sets. The world No. 2 failed to serve out the match in the third set, up 5-4, in which he double-faulted at break point.
In the end, it worked out for the Spaniard, as Argentina’s Nalbandian double-faulted on match point at 5-6 as he attempted to force another tiebreaker. In the end, the two men spent just over 2.5 hours on court in the mid-day sun.
Fortunately, Nadal’s collapse was due to a cramp in both the front and back of his leg. After a short while, he was standing again and the press was invited back in to finish the interview.
Nadal will take on Gilles Muller of Luxembourg in the round of 16.

Wooow... how can you extend cramped muscle if you have it in front and in back...
zare , 9/5/11 10:56 AM
You can't! :)

Sky showed the clip of Rafa's anguish and at first it looked like a heart attack or worse so I shouted out to my other half that Rafa had just collapsed at his presser whilst I rushed off to get my laptop to see if there was any update on it and he said to me 'Are you rushing off to help him?' He said he actually believed for a second that I was rushing off to help Rafa.
nadline , 9/5/11 11:37 AM
Never seen that happen to a player before! The reporter asked him "Are you in pain?" Predictably Rafa lied and said "No." As his face was contorted and he was in obvious pain, he still denies it. Never anything new...........

nadline,
Knowing how devoted you are to Rafa, I can understand why your other half would think that! It would be so totally you! Honestly, it's a helpless feeling when you see your player suffering like that and there is not a single thing you can do to help.
Rafa was interviewed on the tennis channel by Justin Gimelstob yesterday. Rafa said that he could stand and walk around, but not sit down. I assume that would make the leg cramp up again. He was trying to make light of it and seemed a bit embarrassed at all the fuss.
There were some tweets about Rafa practicing today, so he seems to be okay.
Nativenewyorker , 9/5/11 9:27 PM
numero, Rafa wasn't telling lies. It's common for people to say they are alright when they evidently are not. It's just a natural reaction.
nadline , 9/5/11 9:41 PM
Rafa was right to say no....................the question was dumb to begin with!!!!
Monalysa , 9/5/11 10:03 PM
It was quite scary, actually.
Numero - I always tell people "I'm fine" even when I'm bleeding everywhere. I think it's just kneejerk. Plus, as monalysa pointed out, what a silly question. He was clearly in excruciating pain. Duh.

Keep a lookout for the next Rafa impersonation video the Slamless #1 Wonder from Denmark is making, titled: How to win 10 slams!
Oh wait, she ACTUALLY has to win ONE yet....................
This woman gives blondes across the world a bad name.....................
rafaisthebest , 9/7/11 7:56 AM
This article is a fair representation of what the world thinks of Miss Slamless Wonder's dumb blonde moment (one amongst many, truth be told):

rafaisthebest , 9/7/11 8:30 AM
I heard fans all over the world went furious about this and criticized her "joking" about Rafa's cramps...they went as far as to wish her never to win a slam...I think she did a stupid thing...she wanted to be funny and I do not think she wanted to insult Rafa in any way...don?t be so harsh on her: she is, well, she is just a blonde...and she did regret afterwards so it came back to her immediately...this is what she tweeted: "Had a bit of fun last night b4 my press conference. Hope it was not taken the wrong way. I have the upmost respect and admiration of Rafa!!!!"
natashao , 9/7/11 8:42 AM
Wozzi is a member of the Nole Really Tatseless Drama Club. They are friends as they both live in Monaco. Does anyone remember the skit they did with Wozzi acting as a reporter interviewing Nole on how not to lose or something like that?

"....................hope it was not taken the wrong way. I have the upmost respect and admiration for Rafa!!!!" Miss Wozniacki informed the world on twitter, complete with 4 exclamation marks.
Eerily, this is almost exactly what Tipsarevic said in his apology after HIS Rafa mockumentary. Why, I ask myself, do these people only remember their respect and admiration for Rafa immediately after mocking him?
rafaisthebest , 9/7/11 1:42 PM
These incidents reflect badly on these players themselves. They'll have to pay a price for their reckless, childish behavior. Rafa is well loved all over the world, to make fun of him in such classless, tasteless way is asking for trouble and worldwide resentment from his fans.
luckystar , 9/7/11 2:17 PM
I remember her cramping really badly in some match or other, so this is really weird. It's obviously just a misguided attempt to be funny, however how it could be anyone's idea of a laugh is completely beyond me.

Thanks natashao, really enjoyed that commercial!! Somebody needs to show this to Miss Wozniacki so she knows what "funny" means...................

I think it's because the same person writes their scripts.
nadline , 9/7/11 3:43 PM
Look,
Wozi's 21, & she's worth millions despite not being (yet) a particularly great player,
Getting paid more than just about everybody (Inc the top 4 guys) because she's blonde more than anything, apart from Maria 'I give birth every time I'm on court' shreikova.
Oh, she's blonde too but at least she's a great player.
Funny?
She's surely been laughing her ass off for the last 3 years at least!
I still quite like her but
The real joke here is women's Tennis I fear...

Gee Sienna, look what I found!!! A really "funny" video of Woz cramping up during a tourny in Doha............
rafaisthebest , 9/7/11 3:48 PM
rafaisthebest, people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones..;)
deuce , 9/7/11 3:51 PM
that's right, I remember that episode of Woz crying on the court due to the pain she felt from cramping...I felt sorry for her when that happened and the scene was really scary...interesting, though, that she is still able to joke about cramps after her own unpleasant experience...lol...
natashao , 9/7/11 3:57 PM
Ooops, sorry deucy......................thought that was a brick wall round my house, not glass!!!
rafaisthebest , 9/7/11 3:58 PM
rafaisthebest, didn't mean u darling, meant Wozzie and her own cramping episode.
deuce , 9/7/11 5:00 PM
I know who and what u meant, deucy...............................was making fun of me making fun of Woz making fun of...........oh whatever, you get my drift!!
rafaisthebest , 9/7/11 5:04 PM
I'm not sure Wozz was being paid more than the top four guys, at least not more than Fedal. I don't think any of the women is being paid more than the top guys.
luckystar , 9/7/11 5:17 PM
rafaisthebest, that's the trouble with the internet.....could not see you smiling.....
deuce , 9/7/11 5:40 PM
If it doesn't rain again ( unlikely) play is due to start in 20 minutes......

happe ned 4 times!
just for fun jean. why did you do that to Sienna? what's roger got to do with cramps?
fake of medical time out. Always exaggerated, annoying movement. Injustice of medical time out. Exaggerated appeal when condition is bad. All players never do. always annoying player to others when rules are not followed.
Sienna, caroline apologised afterwards on tweeter and to rafa.

Obligation for ATP players to have press conference in short period after match proves to be stupid decision once more. Isn't it enough to force them to play during warmest period of day?
