  • Murray, Isner stay red hot, into fourth round

    9/5/11 6:47 AM | Ricky Dimon
Murray, Isner stay red hot, into fourth round Andy Murray and John Isner maintain their fine form and cruise into the U.S. Open fourth round on Sunday. Murray eases past Feliciano Lopez while Isner gets the better of Alex Bogomolov.

    (4) Andy Murray d. (25) Feliciano Lopez 6-1, 6-4, 6-2

Murray resumed his dominance over Lopez on Sunday night at the U.S. Open, improving his lifetime record against the Spaniard to 5-0. There was little room for suspense among the Arthur Ashe faithful, as Murray raced through this third-round encounter after just one hour and 54 minutes of play.

Lopez briefly found his game to give the fans a close, 57-minute second set but one break was enough for Murray. At that point, Lopez went back into a funk and he seemed to wave the white flag in set three. The 26th-ranked Spaniard was doomed by 46 percent serving and nine double-faults. Next up for Murray is Donald Young, a straight-set winner over Juan Ignacio Chela.

    (28) John Isner d. Alex Bogomolov 7-6(11), 6-4, 6-4

Like Murray, Isner had stormed into New York on the strength of a title; Murray triumphed in Cincinnati and Isner prevailed in Winston-Salem. The 6'9'' American kept up his great play in this one and he survived a thrilling first set before sending Bogomolov home after two hours and 33 minutes. Isner served at 71 percent and fired 17 aces to book a spot in the U.S. Open fourth round for the second time in his career. The No. 28 seed awaits Gilles Simon on Tuesday for a place in the quarterfinals.

Bogomolov, having an incredible summer in his own right, came out firing and had countless chances in the opening frame of play. The world No. 44 extended his opponent to 15-40 in three of his first four return games only to miss a total of six break chances. Isner eventually forced a tiebreaker, survived it 11 points to nine, then cruised the rest of the way. The world No. 22 dropped a mere nine total points in his last 10 service games.
