  • Ferrer and Roddick move into the US Open round of 16

    9/5/11 4:58 AM | Cheryl Murray
Ferrer and Roddick move into the US Open round of 16 David Ferrer and Andy Roddick were victorious on Sunday as the third round in Flushing Meadows wrapped up.

Andy Roddick def. Julien Benneteau 6-1, 6-4 7-6(5)

American Andy Roddick delighted the New York crowds with an immediate break of Frenchman Julien Benneteau’s serve. By the end of the first set, Benneteau had pocketed one game and hadn’t even earned a break point chance from Roddick.

The second set was somewhat better for Benneteau. He was only broken once, but Roddick and his bombastic first serve kept the Frenchman from earning the break back again. Benneteau finally got his serve under control in the third set, but he still wasn’t able to gain any purchase on the Roddick serve. The American just edged Benneteau in the tiebreaker for the straight-set victory.

Roddick will take on No. 5 seed David Ferrer in the 4th round.

David Ferrer def. Florian Mayer 6-1, 6-2, 7-6(2)

There was never any sense that Florian Mayer of Germany had any kind of chance to win this match. David Ferrer was dominant from the moment the first ball was struck.

The Spaniard, who is a much better returner than a server, was broken once in the match right at the start of the third set. Mayer even consolidated the break for 2-0. But after bending to Ferrer’s will for the entire rest of the match, the German was in no position to hold onto the break long enough to take the set.

Ferrer struggled a bit again in his 5-6 service game to send the set to the tiebreaker, but once he held, he was able to loosen up again and dominate the breaker.

There is a problem on Armstrong. They had to stop play because moisture got under the court and has created a bubble.

It's looking like Armstrong stadium might be out of commission for the rest of the tournament. This will be fun.

Roddick is FURIOUS with Brian Earley. holy.cow.

That is outrageous.

Roddick asking to go out on court 13. Earley just called it a "rotten court". Looks like they're headed out there. Armstrong unusable.

Good for Andy though : smaller court so Ferrer can't scurry around so much. Come on Andy keep cool and you're going to win.

From not wanting to play on Armstrong, Roddick is now begging to play on court 13.

This years USO is full of drama, they should make a DVD about it.

I bet they start covering the courts from next year onwards.
