No. 5 seed David Ferrer will take the court against Germany’s Florian Mayer, while Andy Roddick takes on Frenchman Julien Benneteau.
David Ferrer (5) vs. Florian Mayer (26)
The last time Germany’s Florian Mayer defeated David Ferrer was back in 2005. Since then, Ferrer has won their other 3 encounters, each in straight sets.
Ferrer has had a rough summer. The Spaniard comes into the US Open off a wrist micro-fracture. He managed to win a single match in Cincinnati, but he lost in the third round to Gilles Simon. Fortunately for the Ferrer camp he seems to have shaken off the rust this week.
Prediction – Ferrer to win in straight sets.
Andy Roddick (21) vs. Julien Benneteau
American Andy Roddick and Julien Benneteau, ranked 81 in the world, have met on 4 occasions since 2004, with their last encounter coming in 2008 at the Miami Masters. Roddick has won 3 of the 4 meetings, and is ranked a full 61 spots higher than Benneteau. Still, the American has had a dismal summer.
An abdominal injury kept Roddick out of Washington and Montreal and he had just one match in Cincinnati, where he lost to Philipp Kohlschreiber.
Benneteau could actually be a threat to Roddick on hard courts. The American’s groundstrokes have been dodgy and if Benneteau can dictate play, he can pull off the upset.
