• Roddick withstands challenge from Russell

    9/1/11 2:29 PM | Cheryl Murray
Roddick withstands challenge from Russell American Andy Roddick weathered a spirited comeback effort from countryman Michael Russell to set up a second round showdown with newcomer Jack Sock at the US Open.

Andy Roddick was not in the best of form in his opening round match on Wednesday at the US Open. He cruised fairly comfortably in the first two sets, but by the third set, Russell became a legitimate challenge.

Russell, who at age 33 is still ranked No. 96 in the world, began to hit much better in the third frame, but it was Roddick’s own play that caused the most damage. The world No. 21 started creeping further behind the baseline. This questionable tactic not only gave Russell the opportunity to dictate play, but it also saw Roddick dump far too many shots into the bottom of the net.

The third set and most of the fourth showcased a passive and defensive Andy Roddick. Unfortunately for the American star, neither his movement nor his groundstrokes are good enough to make that style successful.

Russell was up a break in the fourth set, as he had been in third, but the veteran’s level dropped off ever-so-slightly and Roddick was able to wrap up the win in four instead of going to a fifth.
