  • Isner again gets the best of Baghdatis

Isner again gets the best of Baghdatis John Isner defeats Marcos Baghdatis in four entertaining sets on Wednesday at the U.S. Open. Isner is through to an all-American showdown against Robby Ginepri.

John Isner had already defeated Marcos Baghdatis twice this summer, first in Montreal and again in Winston-Salem. On Wednesday, Isner took the show to the big stage.

The 6'9'' American beat Baghdatis for the third time in three tries this year and for the fourth time overall, scoring a 7-6(2), 7-6(11), 2-6, 6-4 victory in the second round of the U.S. Open. Isner struck 14 aces and fired 56 winners to prevail after three hours and 12 minutes of high-quality tennis.

Not surprisingly, each of the first two sets progressed without a single service break or even a break point. Isner, though, seemed to be in control throughout the opening frame of play. He won 16 return points to Baghdatis' nine, so it came as no surprise that Isner dominated the tiebreaker seven points to two.

The second was similarly tight, but this time Baghdatis made things far more interesting in the tiebreaker. The Cypriot surged to a 3-0 lead, but Isner went on three-point streak of his own for 3-3. A thrilling 'breaker went with serve the rest of the way until Baghdatis shanked a backhand wide at 11-11. Isner promptly wrapped up the set on serve one point later with a winning volley off the net cord.

Never one to go away without a fight, Baghdatis rebounded in the third. The world No. 59 seized an early break and at that point Isner seemed to conserve energy for an inevitable fourth. As a result, Baghdatis broke again at 5-2 to extend the match in style.

In keeping with his plan, though, a revitalized Isner returned to form in time to prevent a decisive fifth set. The world No. 22 struck for an early break and never came close to giving it back. He dropped a mere five points in his last five service games, clinching victory with a routine hold at 5-4.

Next up for Isner is countryman Robby Ginepri, a four-set winner of Joao Souza.

Isner definitely getting into that long stride of his. Love Baggy's never say die attitude and unfailing sense of humour.
