After getting stranded in North Carolina by Hurricane Irene, Andy Roddick was awarded a Wednesday start as he starts his US Open campaign.
American Andy Roddick has had a rough summer. The one-time top American, who now plays second fiddle to Mardy Fish, started in June with a disappointing third round ouster at Wimbledon. Roddick proceeded to suffer an abdominal injury that kept him out of Washington and Montreal, then went out in the first round in Cincinnati to Philipp Kohlschreiber.
Roddick was finally able to get some time on court in Winston-Salem last week, where he took a late entry to get more match-play. The American made the semifinals, where he lost to eventual winner John Isner.
Veteran Michael Russell is ranked just inside the top 96. Russell has actually had decent results this summer. He made the third round in Washington and successfully qualified in both Montreal and Winston-Salem.
Though Roddick has been out of sorts this summer, he seems to have gotten some rhythm back in North Carolina. He should get through this one fairly routinely.
