Andy Murray survives a first-set scare and races to a three-set win over Somdev Devvarman on Wednesday at the U.S. Open. Murray will go up against an in-form Robin Haase in the second round.
Andy Murray kicked off his 2011 U.S. Open campaign with a 7-6(5), 6-2, 6-1 victory over Somdev Devvarman on Wednesday afternoon. Murray fired eight aces and advanced after two hours and 27 minutes of play.
A tight first set saw Devvarman break serve in the opening game of the match. The world No. 64, who is in the midst of his best year on tour, extended the lead to 3-1 but then gave the break back at 3-2. Both players held from there en route to a tiebreaker, which Murray took seven points to five. The fourth-ranked Scot won five straight points to erase a 3-1 deficit, then clinched it on his third set point at 6-5 with a big forehand.
With momentum in hand, Murray heated up in the second. New York's No. 4 seed gave back an immediate break, but he ended the set on a give-game winning streak. Murray double-faulted on his first set point at 5-2, 40-15, but he pocketed a two-set advantage by forcing Devvarman into an error with another powerful forehand.
Devvarman did not completely go away in the third, but he dug himself in too much of a hole. India's No. 1 player trailed 5-1, but he held for 2-5 then saved one match point before breaking serve to stay alive. In the end, though, Murray had to much and he clinched victory with a final break when Devvarman sent a forehand long.
Next up for Murray is Robin Haase, who crushed Rui Machado 6-0, 6-4, 6-4. Haase won a clay-court title in Kitzbuhel in early August then reached the Winston-Salem semifinals.
