No. 5 seed David Ferrer and resurgent American James Blake moved into the second round at the US National Tennis Center.
David Ferrer (5) def. Igor Andreev 2-6, 6-3, 6-0, 6-4
The unforced errors piled up on Spaniard David Ferrer. The World No. 5 suffered a wrist fracture earlier this summer and the rust of not playing showed in this first round match. Opponent Igor Andreev managed to hold Ferrer to just two games in the opening set. Ferrer helped the Russian along with a low first serve percentage of 52% and just 3 winners to 14 unforced errors.
The Spaniard righted the ship from the second set on. Ferrer secured 5 service breaks in the final 3 frames after not getting a whiff at a break point in set one. Ferrer will take on James Blake in the second round.
James Blake def. Jesse Huta Galung 6-4, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4
American James Blake delighted the New York crowds with a 4-set victory over Dutchman Jesse Huta Galung. The match went along well for Blake in the first two sets. The American was particularly solid in the second set, with a whopping 81% of first serves in and 11 clean winners to 9 unforced errors.
Blake lost the plot on his serve in the third set. The American’s first serve percentage dipped to 38% and Galung was able to take advantage with a service break. But most of the drama came in the fourth. Blake went down an early break, but the crowd got vocal in their support and the American fought back level. With the Dutchman serving at 4-5, Blake earned a 40-0 lead and then ripped a stunning return for the match win.
