Juan Martin Del Potro destroys Filippo Volandri in straight sets on Wednesday at the U.S. Open. Del Potro advances in a section of the draw vacated by Robin Soderling, who pulled out out with a virus.
Playing his first match at the U.S. Open since winning the title in 2009, Juan Martin Del Potro wasted no time bullying his way into the second round on Wednesday afternoon. Del Potro needed just one hour and 28 minutes to dispose of clay-courter Filippo Volandri 6-3, 6-1, 6-1.
The Argentine, who missed most of last season with a wrist injury, started off in relatively slow fashion as he struggled to find the range with his forehand. Soon, though, Del Potro started to overwhelm his opponent and his second break of the day at 5-3 finished off the opening set in style.
From there it was simply a hard-court clinic from the world No. 18. Del Potro game surrendered only one game in each of the final two sets. He wrapped up his effort with 18 aces and three double-faults while striking 38 winners against only 24 unforced errors.
Next up for Del Potro is Diego Junqueira, another clay-courter who got past Karol Beck via retirement.
Del Potro's friendly draw may open up later on if he reaches the fourth round, because No. 6 seed Robin Soderling withdrew due to a virus prior to his first-round match. The Swede had missed the entire hard-court summer with a wrist problem but had seemed ready to make a return in New York.
Instead, lucky loser Rogerio Dutra Da Silva earned a spot in the main draw and his day soon became even luckier. The Brazilian was leading qualifier Louk Sorensen 6-0, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 when the Irishman retired early in the fourth set.
