  • Wawrinka, Young victorious in U.S Open first round

    8/30/11 10:34 PM | Ricky Dimon
Wawrinka, Young victorious in U.S Open first round Stanislas Wawrinka overcomes Maximo Gonzalez in four sets during first-round U.S. Open action on Tuesday. Next up for Wawrinka is Donald Young, a straight-set winner over Lukas Lacko.

    (14) Stanislas Wawrinka d. Maximo Gonzalez 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-3

Wawrinka got off to a slow start but recovered to beat Gonzalez in two hours and 28 minutes while booking a spot in the second round of the U.S. Open on Tuesday. The Swiss dropped serve twice in the first set, including to throw it away at 3-5, and he also fell behind by a break in the second. At that point, though, Wawrinka woke up and cruised the rest of the way.

The world No. 14 finally made headway into his return games and broke twice in set two before serving it out at 5-4. Gonzalez, just 3-13 at the ATP level, saw his level suffer following his early hot streak and he went away without much of a fight. The 109th-ranked Argentine earned just one break point over the final two sets and did not convert it. Wawrinka finished with 10 aces and five double-faults en route to a meeting with Donald Young.

(WC) Donald Young d. (LL) Lukas Lacko 6-4, 6-2, 6-4

Young capitalized on both his wild card and a favorable draw on Tuesday afternoon at the U.S. Open. Lacko got into the main draw as a lucky loser, and he played like a man who had fallen in qualifying. The 162nd-ranked Slovak sprayed a whopping 56 unforced errors in just three sets, over the course of two hours and 13 minutes.

At the same time, though, Young turned in a rock-solid performance. The 22-year-old American struck 20 aces against only 19 errors and he seized six service breaks. He successfully served out all three sets, holding his nerve with minimal trouble. A wild second-serve return by Lacko at 5-4 in the third ended the proceedings. Young, now firmly inside the Top 100 at No. 84 in the world, won 74 percent of his first-serve points and more than half of his second-serve return points.
