Ivo Karlovic ousts Fernando Gonzalez in straight sets on Monday at the U.S. Open. Karlovic is joined in the second round by Richard Gasquet, a routine winner over Sergiy Stakhovsky.
Ivo Karlovic d. Fernando Gonzalez 6-4, 6-4, 7-6(3)
Karlovic fired 23 aces and never dropped served as he defeated Gonzalez in straight sets during first-round action at the U.S. Open on Monday afternoon. Playing just his seventh ATP match of the season due to injury, Gonzalez came out slow and never really got going. The 296th-ranked Chilean dropped serve early in the opening set and could not recover, failing to get a look at a single break chance.
More of the same continued in the second, with Karlovic using one break to pocket a two-set advantage in routine fashion. The 6'10'' Croat had a tougher time of things in the third, but after facing one break point in the second he did not have to save any break points en route to a tiebreaker. Karlovic dominated it seven points to three and advanced after one hour and 56 minutes. Next up for the world No. 94 is Richard Gasquet.
(13) Richard Gasquet d. Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-4, 6-4, 6-0
Gasquet won the last nine games of the match to blow past Stakhovsky and book his place in the second round after one hour and 53 minutes. The 13th-ranked Frenchman, a fourth-round finisher last year at Flushing Meadows, seized one break in the first set and served it out with ease at 5-4. Stakhovsky appeared to sink his teeth into the match when he struck for his only break of the day at 3-3 in the second, but for Gasquet that was only a wakeup call.
In fact, the No. 13 seed did not lose a single game the entire rest of the way. Gasquet broke right back for 4-4, held for 5-4, then added another break to end the second frame of play in style. From there it was all over for Stakhovsky. The Ukrainian earned only one point in three return games and did not find the scoreboard in the third set. Gasquet finished with seven aces and one double-fault while recording a clean 30 winners against 21 unforced errors.
