World No. 3 Roger Federer is set to return to competition, as he heads to the US Open in search of a 17th Grand Slam title. The 30-year-old Swiss will be looking to win his sixth US Open crown in two weeks.
Sixteen-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer makes his return to action following a quarterfinal finish at the Western & Southern Open. The veteran, who entered into the tournament as the defending champion, won consecutive matches before falling to Tomas Berdych in straight sets. The World No. 3 is 42-11 for the season.
Federer has been placed in a competitive quarter of the US Open draw that includes: (8) Mardy Fish, (11) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, (15) Viktor Troicki, (19) Fernando Verdasco, (23) Radek Stepanek, (27) Marin Cilic and (29) Michael Llodra.
The five-time US Open winner is scheduled to begin his run against Santiago Giraldo in the opening round. The closest seed to the World No. 3 is Cilic, who looms as a possible third-round opponent. Successful movement through the draw may set a quarterfinal clash with Fish or Tsonga.
Should progress further into the tournament, Federer looks to a likely showdown with World No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the semifinal. The Swiss is one of only two players to hand the top seed a defeat in 2011.
