Roger Federer has a final chance starting now to keep alive one of his tennis records, with the Swiss having won at least one Grand Slam title each year since 2003 when he began his remarkable run at Wimbledon.
The winner of a record 16 singles titles at the majors needs to pick up a sixth trophy at Flushing Meadows in a fortnight if he's to keep that mark alive. The 30-year-old Swiss won his last major 19 months ago at the 2010 Australian Open.
His best so far this season was a Roland Garros final after losing a semi-final in Melbourne and a Wimbledon quarter-final.
The five-time New York winner is competing in his 48th straight Grand Slam and 50th major overall. "This is my 13th time here, so it's definitely an inspiration seeing guys being around for a long time like Ken Rosewall, Jimmy Connors, Andre Agassi, and are of other players who were there for a long time," said the world record 16-time Grand Slam singles winner.
"I feel my game allows me to still play for many more years because I have a relaxing playing style. I have almost played a thousand matches on tour and that leaves its toll, but I'm very professional when it comes to massages, stretching, diet, sleep, all of that stuff."
