Andy Murray is in a loaded section of the U.S. Open draw as he goes for his first Grand Slam title. Seeds Robin Soderling, Gilles Simon, Juan Martin Del Potro, and John Isner loom large in Murray's quarter.
The third quarter of the U.S. Open draw is absolutely loaded with big names and huge hitters, but that's not necessarily bad news for Andy Murray.
Murray, the highest seed in this section, appears to have avoided most of the danger. His nearest seeds are Feliciano Lopez, Stanislas Wawrinka, and Juan Ignacio Chela, none of whom are in particularly good form at the moment. Murray's toughest test prior to the second week could come in the second round against Robin Haase, who won the Kitzbuhel title earlier this month and recently advanced to the Winston-Salem semis.
Where it really gets interesting is in the other half of this quarter, by far the most talented eighth of the entire bracket. Robin Soderling, Gilles Simon, Juan Martin Del Potro, and John Isner will slug it out for a quarterfinal spot in Flushing Meadows. They could also be challenged by unseeded threats such as Marcos Baghdatis and Alex Bogomolov.
Isner faces a tough opener against Baghdatis, whom the 6'9'' American defeated twice this summer in Montreal and Winston-Salem. If Isner reaches the third round, a showdown with Soderling is likely in the cards. Soderling, though, missed the entire U.S. Open Series with a wrist injury and he could meet an in-form Bogomolov in round two.
Simon and Del Potro, meanwhile, are on a collision course for what would be a blockbuster third-round tilt. They went head-to-head at the same stage of the 2008 U.S. Open, with Del Potro prevailing 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. In their other two encounters, which were split, none of the six sets was more lopsided than 7-5.
