  • Djokovic aiming for first U.S. Open title

    8/28/11 2:36 PM | Ricky Dimon
Djokovic aiming for first U.S. Open title Novak Djokovic seeks his third Grand Slam title of the season as he prepares to take the court in New York. The world No. 1 one is in a section of the draw that also includes Gael Monfils and Tomas Berdych.

Can anyone--or anything--stop Novak Djokovic at the U.S. Open?

Only two players this entire season have managed to slow him down; Roger Federer in the French Open semifinals and Andy Murray in the Cincinnati title match. Murray, however, prevailed via retirement with Djokovic suffering from shoulder trouble.

That shoulder issue is probably the only thing that can derail Djokovic in Flushing Meadows, at least before the final weekend. The top-ranked Serb, owner of a 57-2 record for his 2011 campaign, finds himself in a manageable top section of the draw. Both Gael Monfils and Tomas Berdych are lurking, but neither man could face Djokovic until the quarterfinals.

Djokovic's road begins with qualifier Conor Niland before a matchup against either Pere Riba and Carlos Berlocq. The top seed should lose only a matter of games in those two contests, after which he could run into either Ivan Dodig or Nikolay Davydenko. Richard Gasquet and Alexandr Dolgopolov are possible fourth-round opponents for Djokovic.

Berdych, who played Djokovic in Cincinnati and led by a break in the first set before eventually retiring with a shoulder problem of his own, should be able to set up a fourth-round showdown with Monfils. The ninth-ranked Czech, a first-round loser to Michael Llodra at last year's U.S. Open, may have a chance to avenge a Montreal loss to Janko Tipsarevic in third-round action.

Djokovic has already triumphed this season at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, giving him three slam titles for his career. He is a two-time finalist in New York (lost to Federer in 2008 and to Rafael Nadal in 2010) but has never lifted the winner's trophy.
