Lleyton Hewitt's US Open wild card goes to another Aussie after the veteran pulled the plug on his participation in the major due to his continuing foot problem.
Hewitt is in the midst of a misery season after the March foot surgery which did not seem to cure his problem. Hewitt won the Open a decade ago at the height of his game.
He has played only three ATP matches since Wimbledon, losing two. The No. 165 crashed out in his opening match in North Carolina, then a day later said he was out of the Open, which starts on Monday.
Hewitt has not reached the second week of a major since Wimbledon, 2009, and has played only 17 ATP matches this season, winning seven.
Hewitt gave no hint of his decision after his last loss, saying he needs "a lot of practise and a lot of treatment" before the start of the Open.
