Roger Federer lost early in Montreal and will be hoping to bounce back this week in Cincinnati. The world No. 3 could face a tough opener against Juan Martin Del Potro as he wraps up his U.S. Open preparation.
Roger Federer's section at the Western & Southern Open does not look too daunting...except for one giant roadblock.
With Juan Martin Del Potro unseeded, Federer and Del Potro could do battle in a rematch of the 2009 U.S. Open final as early as the second round in Cincinnati. If the Argentine can get past Andreas Seppi on Sunday, the brutal early-round showdown will become a reality.
Federer will desperately want to get through his opener for multiple reasons. First, he is the defending Cincinnati champion. Second, the Swiss will be short on match practice heading into the season's final Grand Slam if he goes down right away. Federer contested only two matches in Montreal, falling to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the third round.
The Federer-Del Potro winner should be favored to reach the semifinals out what is an otherwise relatively soft quarter of the bracket. However, there are some intriguing first-round tilts including Marcos Baghdatis vs. James Blake, Ivo Karlovic vs. Florian Mayer, and Juan Monaco vs. Tommy Haas.
In addition to Federer, the other seeds in the second section are Tomas Berdych, Nicolas Almagro, and Viktor Troicki. Berdych, a quarterfinalist in Montreal, will begin against either Monaco or Haas.
