It's down to doubles in Canada for Andy Murray after the disappointed winner of the last two editions of the Masters 1000 events in the country failed to advance past his first match.
The ATP No. 4 suffered a devastating slump as he crashed out 6-3, 6-1 to Kevin Anderson in the second round after a bye.
Two and a half weeks of post-Wimbledon training went up in smoke with Murray now wondering what went wrong. "I just felt like half a step slow, every time he came to the net, I was a bit late getting to the ball.
"On my own service games, I served badly. My first step after the serve wasn't great. I just got behind in the rallies early and didn't move particularly well."
British hopes are now pinned on the Scot to rise from the ashes next week in Cincinnati. Meanwhile he's concentrating on helping elder brother Jamie to get some points and prize money in doubles.
"I play to try and get time on the match court, and winning isn't necessarily always the most important thing.
"When I play with Jamie, I want to win. So that obviously adds a bit of pressure. Every time you're desperate to win at something, you put a bit more pressure on yourself.
"I've trained really hard to get ready for the tournament. I've always played very well here. Today I couldn't get anything going. I started both sets really, really badly which doesn't help."
