An historic golf club in Sydney will be the venue for the September 16-18 Davis Cup World Group playoff tie between Australia and Switzerland, with officials unsure of Roger Federer will make the trip for the visitors.
The Royal Sydney Golf Club boasts a set of 13 grass courts, surface of choice for Australia.
"Our team is excited about having a home tie and taking on Switzerland," said captain Pat Rafter. "Our priority is to get back in the World Group and we are doing everything we can to achieve this.
"It will be great to take on the Swiss on the historic grass courts of Royal Sydney in front of what we hope will be a noisy home crowd."
The club last played host to tennis a decade ago, a Fed Cup tie won over the Swiss. State government officials are pleased to have been selected over a rival bid from the far Western city of Perth, venue for the annual Hopman Cup over the New Year.
"Securing major events is front and centre in our strategy to rebuild the NSW economy and we wish Pat Rafter and the Australian team all the best in Sydney this September", said the state premier.
The choice of grass could be perfect for Federer, who owns six Wimbledon titles. The tie is played the week after the US Open and could present a travel problem if the No. 3 is involved in the final weekend of play in New York.
Australia wil hope to count on veteran Lleyton Hewitt and teenaged talent Bernard Tomic, a Wimbledon quarter-finalist.
