Andy Roddick is fighting to salvage his summer after pulling out of the Montreal Masters with the abdominal muscle injury which has delayed the start of his pre-US Open hardcourt campaign.
The one-time No. 1 and three-time Wimbledon finalist has not set foot on a court since losing a Davis Cup rubber in his Austin, Texas, hometown in July.
Now even mking the US Open may be looking like a struggle for the player who turns 29 on day two of the final major of the season. Roddick is hedging his bets about being fit in time for the Cincinnati Masters which follows Montreal and has entered the new minor ATP 250 event in North Carolina the week before the US Open as a precaution to hopefully get some match play.
The No. 12 and second American behind Mardy Fish is not the only one missing from Montreal. Also out: No. 5 Robin Soderling (wrist), Austrian Jurgen Melzer (muscle pull this week in Washington), Spain's Guillermo Garcia Lopez and Belgian veteran Xavier Malisse.
Roddick remains optimistic: "Hopefully I'll be ready for Cincy in 10 days or so. . . Fingers crossed," he Tweeted
The American has characterised his year as something of a disaster. "I haven't played well this year for sure, probably not at my best since probably April of last year."
