After dropping a huge hint following his weekend title loss in Los Angeles to Ernests Gulbis, a fatigued and injured Mardy Fish has withdrawn as second seed from this week's Washington ATP event.
The exit could not have come at a worse time for the event, which lost three-time champion Andy Roddick to an abdominal muscle injury which some reports say could be more serious than originally appeared.
Fish, up to a record eighth ranking, admitted that he had been suffering last week with a heel injury from his trophy week in Atlanta, but said it had no bearing on his loss to Gulbis in the final.
Inserted into the draw was drug-ban American Wayne Odesnik, working his ways back in the game after serving sanctions for carrying illegal human growth hormones.
Fish was seeded behind Frenchman Gael Monfils in the Washington field. The 29-year-old was originally entered to play almost every week in the run up to the August 29 start of the US Open. "I can't say," was his answer when asked if that demanding calendar would still stand.
