Australian coaches are hoping that Roger Federer may feel the effects of a long trip from the US Open to Western Australia should the Swiss line up as expected in the September 16-18 Davis Cup tie against Australia.
Perth is now becoming a favourite to host the tie, with the winner returning to the elite World Group. If Federer fronts up, it will likely have been after a long flight from New York, if the No. 3 figures in the last weekend of the Open, which he has won five times.
Australia are hoping to sell a showdown between home hero Lleyton Hewitt and Federer as a highlight of the weekend, likely to be played on grass at the city's Royal Kings Park Tennis Club in the southern spring.
The tie is inconveniently scheduled to start just five days after the Open final. Aussie captain Patrick Rafter is reported to be in favour of Perth just for its 18,700-kilometer distance from New York and all the flying that trip involves.
Australia are hoping to play both Hewitt, 30, and teenaged Wimbledon quarter-finalist Bernard Tomic, while Switzerland could well have Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka.
Federer last played in Perth a decade ago when he won the annual Hopman Cup mixed event with Martina Hingis. Hewitt beat Federer in a classic Davis Cup five setter in the 2003 semi-finals in Melbourne.
