  • Gulbis trades one Argentine coach for another

    7/27/11 11:16 PM | Johan Lindahl
Gulbis trades one Argentine coach for another Fragile Latvian Ernests Gulbis has changed coaches again, with the No. 84 who was once tipped to join the elite now being guided by former Top 10 Guillermo Canas.

The 34-year-old Argentine who retired in 2009 is helping Gulbis this week in Los Angeles, their third event together.

Gulbis has taken the rap over the years for a lack of work ethic as the son of one of his country's richest businessmen who has been known to fly to tournaments in his father's private jet. Gulbis began the pre-US Open week with a first round upset of Xavier Malisse at UCLA to end a five-match loss streak going back to mid-May.

Gulbis hooked up with Canas at Wimbledon, The player went out last week in Atlanta in the first round to James Blake but is hopeful of turning around his game under new mentorship.

Gulbis has traded one Argentine for another after parting company with former Marat Safin coach Hernan Gumy, who was unable to continue with a worldwide travel schedule.

It appears so, doesn't it? Shocking, really. :)

Haven't heard about Gulbis in quite some time. It's a shame the way this guy wastes his talent the way he has. If he actually took tennis serious enough, he would be winning some of these titles, boosting his confidence, and challenging top players. Instead, he's just another pretender with no real ambition. Hopefully he'll do something respectful for the rest of the season, but I'm not holding my breath.
