Comeback effors will be breaking out all around the grounds at this week's Los Angeles ATP event as over-30 old stagers James Blake and Tommy Haas plus Robbie Ginepri all try to re-gain their lost tennis form.
Blake, who went through several seasons of knee and other problems, at No. 90 is straight into the hardcourt field at UCLA while former No. 2 and two-time champion Haas of Germany and Florida and Ginepri needed wild cards. Haas, aged 33, is struggling back from hip surgery. Ginepri broke an elbow when a rogue squirrel got in his way and forced him to crash during a mountain biking ride last September.
Missing from the field is Californian Sam Querrey, winner of the last two editions, including last summer against Andy Murray, who had just split with his coach. But Querrey is recovering from elbow surgery and is not expected back on the ATP for up to another month.
"As of right now, it seems like I am on the right track to be able to play both of those events (North Carolina the week before the US Open and the Open from August 29)."
Haas stands 1-5 since returning to the Tour at the French Open and lost to Ginepri in the first round last week in Atlanta.
