John Isner admitted he hit the wall in draining heat to lose the Atlanta final to Mardy Fish despite holding a pair of match points which if converted could have led to a comfortable straight-sets title win.
But fitness on the day played a role in the high temperatures, with the 29-year-old Fish proving to be the stronger specimen, denying Isner a second straight title this month after he won on Newport grass. "I had a match point on my serve," said a glum Isner. "You can't ask for much more than that. That's how it goes.
"It was still a good week. I really, really wish I could've won this title. But it wasn't to be. I ran out of gas in the third set, but I didn't feel my best out there. Maybe it was the heat. I don't know."
Fish was fresh as he took his first title in a year to maintain his No. 9 ranking on the ATP. his last trophy - the 2010 Atlanta final over Isner as well.
The winner was not put off my Isner drooping body language on the way to defeat. "He looks like that a lot. Sometimes it might be a ploy because you're not sure how tired he is. But I certainly felt great, maybe that got me an extra break in the third set."
