  • Fish fitness makes the difference in Atlanta title win

    7/25/11 10:35 PM | Johan Lindahl
Fish fitness makes the difference in Atlanta title win John Isner admitted he hit the wall in draining heat to lose the Atlanta final to Mardy Fish despite holding a pair of match points which if converted could have led to a comfortable straight-sets title win.

But fitness on the day played a role in the high temperatures, with the 29-year-old Fish proving to be the stronger specimen, denying Isner a second straight title this month after he won on Newport grass. "I had a match point on my serve," said a glum Isner. "You can't ask for much more than that. That's how it goes.

"It was still a good week. I really, really wish I could've won this title. But it wasn't to be. I ran out of gas in the third set, but I didn't feel my best out there. Maybe it was the heat. I don't know."

Fish was fresh as he took his first title in a year to maintain his No. 9 ranking on the ATP. his last trophy - the 2010 Atlanta final over Isner as well.

The winner was not put off my Isner drooping body language on the way to defeat. "He looks like that a lot. Sometimes it might be a ploy because you're not sure how tired he is. But I certainly felt great, maybe that got me an extra break in the third set."
