Number one seed Mardy Fish is set to return to hard-court competition following a successful title defense in Atlanta. The veteran will be joined by Juan Martin Del Potro, who captured the LA crown in 2008.
World No. 9 Mardy Fish will continue his US hard-court effort for the last week of July, having put together a title-winning run in Atlanta. The 29-year-old rallied to defeat fellow American John Isner for the championship Sunday afternoon.
Fish has compiled a 26-14 record this season, with quarterfinal or better berths earned in six tournaments played.
The World No. 9 leads the top half of the draw that hosts: (3) Marcos Baghdatis, (6) Dmitry Tursunov and (8) Igor Kunitsyn. Other players in the same half are Somdev Devvarman, Ryan Sweeting, Robby Ginepri, Yen-Hsun Lu, Ryan Harrison, Richard Berankis, Michael Russell and former World No. 5 Fernando Gonzalez.
After an opening-round bye, Fish is slated to begin his run against either Gilles Muller or wildcard Steve Johnson. The closest seed to the American is Kunitsyn, who looms as a possible quarterfinal-round opponent. Successful movement through the draw may set a semifinal clash with Baghdatis or Tursunov.
Former champion Juan Martin Del Potro returns to action following a solid effort in Davis Cup. The 22-year-old helped home nation Argentina through to the semifinal, having downed Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan.
Del Potro has been placed in the same half as (4) Thomaz Bellucci, (5) Xavier Malisse and (7) Grigor Dimitrov. Additional combatants in the section include: Tommy Haas, Alex Bogomolov, Alejandro Falla, Ernests Gulbis, Michael Berrer and James Blake.
