The internet rumour that Luxembourg's Gilles Muller is descended from royalty has been quietly laid to rest at the ATP event in Atlanta.
Tournament organizers are relieved that their error passing along the urban myth in the official tournament program has been laughed off by the No. 82 semi-finalist.
Muller insists he's not the "Baron of Schifflange" as any internet search will inform. "It’s not true" was his response to the hyped-up gossip making the rounds at the small suburban tournament grounds.
Online it is reported that the 28-year-old is descended from the Baron of Schifflange, ruler of Luxembourg in the 18th century.
Officials said they were duped. "Based on thousands of internet references to Gilles Muller being descended from Baron Muller of Luxembourg, we ran that fact in the Atlanta Tennis Championships program," said a spokesman. "We worked hard to verify all our facts in our program and apologize for the error. Gilles was obviously shocked to find out just today that this reference was an accepted fact.
"We're glad he found the reference humorous. We are very pleased that Muller verified that this was not correct and cleared the air here in Atlanta."
Muller is much more concerned with the present after qualifying for his first semi-final in six years on the ATP.
