American teenager Ryan Harrison is showing that he's not one to back down from a tennis confrontation, with the 19-year-old demonstrating his fighting spirit - and hot temper - in a minor confrontation at the ATP event in Atlanta.
The world No. 120 won a second-round match over Belgian Xavier Malisse but not without getting into a verbal skirmish with the fourth seed.
The headstrong American admitted that he and his opponent exchanged choice words on a changeover after a pair of breaks following a three-hour rain and lightning interruption.
"When I broke him back he said some things that I wasn't too happy with. So I said some things back," explained the teenager. "It was the heat of the moment. We both want to win. I like it when it gets intense; the competitive drive sparks me, it's an added motivation. But whoever wins will always get the last laugh."
Harrison is one of the next-gen hopes for the American game, playing in the event where national No. 1 Mardy Fish - ranked ninth on the ATP - is defending his 2010 title.
"I try to let the negative go by and try and use the positive to fuel me," said Harrison. who has beaten a string of Top 50 opponents this season. "I have more belief in myself this year.
"I know that I don't have to over-play to beat these guys, I can just trust in my abilities to get it done."
