As the clay season finally grinds to a close, Jurgen Melzer, Fernando Verdasco and Juan Monaco try for a few more clay points in Hamburg.
Austria’s Jurgen Melzer snagged the No. 2 seed at the 500 level tournament this week in Hamburg, Germany. Joining the Austrian in the bottom half of the draw are Stuttgart champion Juan Carlos Ferrero, Fernando Verdasco, Juan Monaco and Nicolas Almagro.
Melzer will likely not be the favorite to come through his half of the draw. The Austrian had a few good tournaments earlier in the European clay court swing, but his current results have been disappointing. Almagro, Italy’s Fabio Fognini or Juan Monaco will have chances to pick up ranking points with a good result in Hamburg.
Also lurking in this section is one-time top 4 player Nikolay Davydenko, who is talented enough to always be a danger.
