Atlanta is now the annual first stop for the U.S. Open Series, and it all gets started on Monday. Last year's finalists Mardy Fish and John Isner headline a field that also includes Lleyton Hewitt, Tommy Haas, and Xavier Malisse.
For the second straight season since moving from Indianapolis, the Atlanta Tennis Championships will kick off the annual U.S. Open Series. The 250-point hard-court event that opens a six-week tennis extravaganza building up to the season's final Grand Slam gets underway on Monday.
Two of the top Americans in the game headline a strong field. Mardy Fish, looking to bounce back from Davis Cup disappointment, returns as the defending champion along with John Isner, who won the Newport title last weekend and finished runner-up last year in Atlanta. Other Americans in the field include Ryan Harrison, James Blake, and local wild card entrants Robby Ginepri and Donald Young.
Fish faces an opener against either up-and-comer Richard Berankis or veteran Nicolas Massu. The No. 1 seed's first effort should be his toughest prior to the semis in what is a relatively modest section of the draw. Potential semifinal opponents for Fish out of a brutal quarter of the bracket are Harrison, Xavier Malisse, Grigor Dimitrov, and Lleyton Hewitt.
Ranked ninth in the world, Fish is in the midst of another awesome season but he is coming off two tough Davis Cup singles losses to Spain's Feliciano Lopez and David Ferrer.
Like Fish, Isner also awaits a difficult initial test. The 6'9'' American will go up against either hard-hitting Latvian Ernests Gulbis or doubles partner James Blake. As long as Isner takes care of his second-round match, he should have no trouble advancing to the last four.
All three wild cards--Ginepri, Young, and Tommy Haas--find themselves in the final quarter of the draw. Ginepri and Haas, familiar foes especially at the U.S. Open, are already slated for a blockbuster first-round matchup. Seeds Alex Bogomolov and Kevin Anderson will have their hands full from start to finish.
