  • Soderling, Berdych set up Bastad semifinal showdown

    7/15/11 11:31 PM | Ricky Dimon
Soderling, Berdych set up Bastad semifinal showdown Robin Soderling rolls over Potito Starace in the Swedish Open quarterfinals on Friday. Soderling is now set for a blockbuster semifinal against Tomas Berdych, who dismissed Blaz Kavcic in straight sets.

    (1) Robin Soderling d. (8) Potito Starace 6-3, 6-4

Soderling lost only 10 points in 10 service games and did not face a single break point as he took out Starace with ease in the quarterfinals of the SkiStar Swedish Open on Friday. Starace served at 81 percent in the first set, but Soderling managed to break once and that was all he needed to serve out the opening frame of play at 5-3.

The 51st-ranked Italian did not serve as well in the second, but his baseline game held up and he stayed within striking distance of his heavily-favored opponent. However, Starace never could make any headway in his return games and one break again made the difference. After Starace survived a tough service game at 3-5, Soderling sealed the deal with one last routine hold at 5-4. Next up for Bastad's top seed is Tomas Berdych.

    (3) Tomas Berdych d. Blaz Kavcic 6-1, 6-4

Berdych needed only one hour and 18 minutes to book his spot in the Bastad semifinals, easing past Kavcic for the second time this season. The eighth-ranked Czech came out firing and dropped only a single game in the first set. Berdych did not face a break point en route to serving out the opening frame of play at 5-1.

Kavcic, who also fell to Berdych in the Chennai Open quarters, at least managed to make the second more competitive. Still, the 79th-ranked Slovak donated his own serve once and that was one too many times, as he again failed to get a look at a break point. Berdych wrapped up his effort with a routine hold at 5-4, finishing the day with two aces and three double-faults while winning 74 percent of his first-serve points.
