Ferrer advances to Swedish Open quarters David Ferrer wins his Bastand opener over Pere Riba on Thursday. Ferrer is joined in the quarterfinals by Blaz Kavcic, who advanced due to Juan Monaco's foot injury.

David Ferrer made a quick turnaround following Davis Cup heroics in Austin, Texas and dismissed Pere Riba 6-2, 7-6(4) in the second round of the SkiStar Swedish Open on Thursday. Ferrer, who won two singles rubbers against the United States last weekend, advanced to the quarterfinals after two hours and five minutes of play.

The sixth-ranked Spaniard served poorly in the first set, but he saved all four of the break points he faced. As a result, two breaks were more than enough for Ferrer to close out the opening frame of play on his racket at 5-2.

A more competitive and rain-interrupted second set saw Riba raise his level. The world No. 71, a heavy underdog against his countryman, fought off three break points as he pocketed all six of his service games and forced a tiebreaker. Ferrer, though, picked it up when it mattered and he won the decider seven points to four.

Next up for the No. 2 seed is Andreas Haider-Maurer, a straight-set winner over Filippo Volandri. Blaz Kavcic, meanwhile, got a walkover into the last eight thanks to Juan Monaco's foot injury.
