Roger Federer could have a chance to avenge one of the most disheartening defeats of his career if he and Lleyton Hewitt both front up for the Australia-Switzerland Davis Cup World Group qualifier in September.
In was in Melbourne eight years ago that Hewitt rallied from two sets to love down to beat the young Swiss in a Davis Cup struggle which led Australia to the semi-final victory that weekend. After that day, Federer had never been in a similar kind of jam - until it happened in the Wimbledon quarter-finals against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga a fortnight ago.
Hewitt helped Australia past China in Beijing last weekend while Federer won the only match he played as Switzerland crushed Portugal to earn the chance to return to the top Davis Cup grouping.
However appetising the potential clash may be, there is nothing guaranteed about the appearance of either one of the former No. 1 players. With the tennis calendar so packed and the tie being contested the week after the US Open, any playing decision will all come down to fitness on the day.
One thing that could throw a wrench into proceedings - a possible fourth straight Monday final in New York due to rain and no covered roof on the stadium of the aging facility.
