(3) Mikhail Youzhny vs. Juan Carlos Ferrero
World No. 17 Mikhail Youzhny trails round of 16 opponent Juan Carlos Ferrero 1-2 in the series. The two are meeting for the first time since 2009, when the Spaniard won a first-round match at Wimbledon.
Youzhny began his bid with a 6-3, 6-3 victory against Philipp Petzschner. The 29-year-old Russian is bidding for his third quarterfinal berth of the season.
World No. 85 Juan Carlos Ferrero recorded a first-round win against lucky loser Bastian Knittel, 6-2, 6-4. The 31-year-old veteran looks to make his first quarter since April, when he advanced to the last eight in Barcelona.
(8) Guillermo-Garcia Lopez vs. (WC) Lukasz Kubot
Eighth seed Guillermo Garcia-Lopez leads wildcard Lukasz Kubot 1-0 in the series, having won their only previous meeting at the 2010 US Open.
Garcia-Lopez opened his Mercedes Cup effort with a 6-1, 6-3 defeat of veteran Radek Stepanek. The 28-year-old Spaniard is bidding for his first quarterfinal since April, when he made the final eight in Houston.
World No. 69 Lukasz Kubot overcame a difficult opening round, having held on to defeat Daniel Gimeno-Traver in three sets, 7-6(2), 3-6, 6-2. The 29-year-old will attempt to reach his first quarterfinal since Acapulco.
