Robin Soderling treats the Bastad fans to an easy second-round victory on Wednesday. Soderling is joined in the quarterfinals by Tomas Berdych, a straight-set winner over Teymuraz Gabashvili.
(1) Robin Soderling d. (Q) Diego Junqueira 6-0, 6-1
Soderling dropped only one game during second-round action at the SkiStar Swedish Open as he hammered Junqueira in a mere 47 minutes on Wednesday night. The top seed and 2009 champion came out firing and lost just seven total points in the first set, including one in three service games.
Junqueira actually went the entire match without holding serve, although the 101st-ranked Argentine struck for a surprising break when he trailed 2-0 in the second. Soderling woke up again at that point and cruised through the final four games of the match for victory. The fifth-ranked Swede will face No. 8 seed Potito Starace in Friday's quarterfinals.
(3) Tomas Berdych d. Teymuraz Gabashvili 6-2, 6-2
Berydch rolled in similarly routine fashion on Wednesday in Bastad, although Gabashvili at least managed to extend his opponent past the one-hour mark. After one hour and 25 minutes of play, Berdych set up a quarterfinal clash against either Juan Monaco or Blaz Kavcic.
The eighth-ranked Czech struck nine aces and double-faulted twice while refusing to drop serve a single time throughout the entire match. Two breaks in each set were more than enough for this week's No. 3 seed to blow past Gabashvili. As for the 138th-ranked Russian, he served at just 45 percent and won 42 percent of his second-serve points.
