David Ferrer will be in action at the Swedish Open on Thursday as he goes up against fellow Spaniard Pere Riba. Juan Monaco and Blaz Kavcic are also taking the court.
Pere Riba vs. (2) David Ferrer
Just four days after finishing off the United States in a huge Davis Cup quarterfinal victory for Spain, Ferrer will be back in action at the SkiStar Swedish Open. The sixth-ranked Spaniard won a pair of singles rubbers over Andy Roddick on Friday and--in the clincher--over Mardy Fish on Sunday. Ferrer is now a stellar 36-10 for his 2011 campaign and he is back on his preferred surface of clay after contesting the Davis Cup tie on fast indoor hard courts.
Up first for Ferrer, following a bye, is Riba. The 71st-ranked Spaniard is in the midst of a fine season on the pro tour, having earned eight of his 17 career ATP match victories. Riba booked his spot in the second round with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Swedish wild card Christian Lindell. Even if Ferrer is slightly worn out, this should be over after two routine sets.
Blaz Kavcic vs. (6) Juan Monaco
Kavcic and Monaco will also be squaring off for the first time in their careers when they meet in the Bastad second round on Thursday. Both men battled through tough openers; Kavcic ousted Julien Benneteau 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 on Tuesday and Monaco overcame Carlos Berlocq 6-7(5), 7-6(7), 6-2 on Wednesday.
Monaco, seeded sixth this week, is now an even 16-16 for the year and he registers at No. 43 in the world. Kavcic is a respectable 12-14 at the ATP level this season and he comes in at a ranking of 79th, just seven spots off his career-high. The underdog Slovak will be able to employ his steady baseline tactics on clay, but look for Monaco to get the job done in three sets.
