Seventh seed Andreas Seppi looks to break a 1-1 series tie with Marcel Granollers early Wednesday. The Italian leads 1-0 on clay.
Seppi begins his Mercedes Cup bid with a 13-12 season record. The 27-year-old, ranked World No. 37, makes his return to competition following a second-round loss to Marcos Baghdatis at Wimbledon. He heads into Stuttgart with a title in hand, having won his first ATP World Tour championship at Eastbourne.
World No. 52 Marcel Granollers is a modest 10-16 for the year. The 25-year-old Spaniard competed in Davis Cup over the weekend, where he and partner Fernando Verdasco lost a doubles match to Bob and Mike Bryan.
(8) Guillermo-Garcia Lopez vs. (WC) Lukasz Kubot
Eighth seed Guillermo Garcia-Lopez leads wildcard Lukasz Kubot 1-0 in the series, having won their only previous meeting at the 2010 US Open.
Garcia-Lopez opened his Mercedes Cup effort with a 6-1, 6-3 defeat of veteran Radek Stepanek. The 28-year-old Spaniard is bidding for his first quarterfinal since April, when he made the final eight in Houston.
World No. 69 Lukasz Kubot overcame a difficult opening round, having held on to defeat Daniel Gimeno-Traver in three sets, 7-6(2), 3-6, 6-2. The 29-year-old will attempt to reach his first quarterfinal since Acapulco.
