Stuttgart - Monfils misses match points, falls to Hanescu Top seed Gael Monfils had his Mercedes Cup bid cut short, having failed to convert two match points against veteran Victor Hanescu. The Romanian pulled off the upset in three sets on Wednesday.

    Victor Hanescu def. (1) Gael Monfils 2-6, 7-6(7), 6-4

Victor Hanescu is through to the round of 16, after rallying to oust World No. 7 Gael Monfils. The 29-year-old saved two match points, en route to a three-set success in two hours and 17 minutes. Monfils, who led 4-2 when play resumed on Wednesday, committed eight double faults during the match.

"I am very happy to beat a Top 10 player," said Hanescu. "It is always good to beat these kind of players. It was a tough first round for me, so I am now looking to continue to play well here. It was tough in the tie-break, but I was focused and hung in there. Luck was on my side."

"It was tough," said Monfils. "Victor played well and I dropped a bit. He was solid, so it was hard for me to find a solution."

Hanescu is slated to face qualifier Pavol Cevernak in the next round.

    Marcel Granollers def. (7) Andreas Seppi 6-3, 3-6, 6-3

Marcel Granollers reached the second round, following his three-set victory against 7th seed Andreas Seppi. The Spaniard came through the opener in two hours and 10 minutes.

He will take on Benoit Paire for a spot in the quarterfinal.
