Robin Soderling and Tomas Berdych will contest their openers at the Swedish Open on Wednesday. They are going up against Diego Junqueira and Teymuraz Gabashvili, respectively.
(1) Robin Soderling vs. (Q) Diego Junqueira
The Swedish crowd will be treated to its top player on Wednesday as Soderling kicks of his campaign at the SkiStar Swedish Open. Soderling is 18-8 lifetime in Bastad, captured the title in 2009, and finished runner-up to Nicolas Almagro last year. Soderling is favored to go one step further this time around, as he boasts a 34-9 match record for the season.
Up first for the No. 1 seed, who got a bye to the second round, is Junqueria. The 101st-ranked Argentine is already in the midst of an outstanding week, having qualified for the main draw before outlasting Igor Andreev in three sets. Junqueira's win over Andreev was his first ATP match victory of the season. The underdog is no pushover on clay, but Soderling should get the job done in two routine sets.
(3) Tomas Berdych vs. Teymuraz Gabashvili
Berdych and Gabashvili will also be squaring off for the first time in their careers when they do battle in the Bastad second round on Wednesday. While Berdych earned a bye as the third of the top four seeds, Gabashvili battled past special exemption entrant Michael Yani 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. For the 138th-ranked Russian, it was just his ninth ATP match victory of the season against 15 losses.
Berdych is no longer at the level that he displayed in 2010, but he still comes in with a solid 32-14 record for his 2011 campaign. The eighth-ranked Czech is looking to bounce back on clay, as his only semifinal during the spring swing came in Nice and he dropped his first match at the French Open. Berdych would prefer to play Gabashvili on a faster surface, but the No. 3 seed should still advance in straight sets.
