    Stuttgart - Youzhny advances, Melzer upset Tournament seed Mikhail Youzhny advanced to the round of 16 at the Mercedes Cup, following his straight-set win over Philipp Petzschner. Santiago Giraldo also moved on, having ousted second seed Jurgen Melzer.

    (3) Mikhail Youzhny def. Philipp Petzscher 6-3, 6-3

    Former champion Mikhail Youzhny is through to the second round, after taking out Philipp Petzschner on Tuesday. The Russian converted four of seven break points, en route to a 6-3, 6-3 victory in 71 minutes.

    “It was the first match played on clay after grass; it’s always tough,” Youzhny commented, post match.. “But I’m happy with the first match I played. I think it was important the beginning of the sets when I broke him, and I broke him one more time.”

    He is slated to face Juan Carlos Ferrero for a spot in the quarterfinal. The former World No. 1 dismissed lucky loser Bastian Knittel in the opening round, 6-2, 6-4.

    Santiago Giraldo def. (2) Jurgen Melzer 6-4, 7-5

    World No. 61 Santiago Giraldo reached the round of 16, following his upset-victory over second seed Jurgen Melzer. The 23-year-old tallied 7 aces and four service breaks through 89 minutes of play. With the opening-round win Giraldo improved his season record to 20-16.

    He will take on Jeremy Chardy in the next round. The Frenchman defeated German Tobias Kamke in the first round, 7-6(1), 6-1.
