Julien Benneteau and Igor Andreev will be featured on Tuesday at the Swedish Open. They are going up against Blaz Kavcic and Diego Junqueira, respectively.
Julien Benneteau vs. Blaz Kavcic
Benneteau will look to get back on track in 2011 when he contests his opening match at the SkiStar Swedish Open on Tuesday. The Frenchman is just 8-12 at the ATP level this season and has dipped out of the Top 100 at No. 106 in the world. However, he appears to be slowly rounding into form having advanced out of the first round of his last four ATP events--including all three of his grass-court efforts.
Up first for Benneteau in Bastad is Kavcic, who is enjoying his best year on the pro tour. The 24-year-old Slovak has earned 11 of his 24 career ATP match wins in 2011 and is up to No. 79 in the world, seven spots off his career-high. Kavcic will be content to play this one on clay, as his serve is relatively weak but his baseline game is consistent. This could go either way, but Benneteau in three sets is the pick.
Igor Andreev vs. (Q) Diego Junqueira
Andreev and Junqueira will be squaring off for the second time in their careers when they do battle in the Bastad opening round on Tuesday. Their only previous encounter came two years ago on the clay courts of Gstaad, where Andreev prevailed 7-5, 6-4.
Junqueira has not yet played a match at the ATP level this season, but he did well to qualify for the main draw over the weekend with a trio of straight-set wins. Andreev is a mediocre 12-18 for his 2011 campaign and he registers at 75th in the world, 26 spots ahead of his opponent. Look for the Russian to emerge victorious after two competitive sets.
