Defending champion Albert Montanes came through a challenging first round to defeat Gilles Simon late Monday. The Spaniard is joined in round two by 8th seed Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, who took out Radek Stepanek.

Defending champion Albert Montanes survived a difficult opening round, where he rallied to oust 4th seed Gilles Simon in nearly two hours of play. The Spaniard hit 10 double faults, but returned well to convert six of 9 break point chances. After splitting the first two sets, Montanes secured three service breaks in the deciding set.
He moves on to meet either fellow Spaniard Pablo Andujar or qualifier Victor Crivoi in the next round.
(8) Guillermo Garcia-Lopez def. Radek Stepanek 6-1, 6-3
Eighth seed Guillermo Garcia-Lopez made a strong start to the tournament, having upended veteran Radek Stepanek in straight sets. The Spaniard, who passed through the 76-minute match unbroken, converted four of 8 break points on the day. Stepanek committed seven double faults and won just 32% of his second-serve points.
Garcia-Lopez will face compatriot Daniel Gimeno-Traver or wildcard Lukasz Kubot for a spot in the quarterfinal.
